12 The stand-back strategy Gladeana McMahon Purpose The purpose of this exercise is to provide the client with a strategy for managing unwanted instant emotional reactions. Description When facing difficult situations, this strategy enables the client to develop ways of disengaging from unwanted emotions and associated unhelpful behaviours by providing what could be described as a ‘circuit breaker’, allowing the client to replace the self-defeating emotion and associated behaviour with that of a more self-enhancing nature.

It trains the client to breathe in a way that takes the edge off negative feelings and is not noticeable to others. It can therefore be used even when the client is engaged in conversation, for example while they are listening to what the other person is saying. Process The client is asked to take in a long, slow breath through his/her nose and then to release it equally slowly through the mouth.
